The River City Soap Box Derby kicks off Saturday at Lakebottom Park at 9 a.m.

The event is one of many Let’s Grow STEAMx activities which provide educational opportunities through fun-filled experiences. STEAMx focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

Prior to the race, participants were required to attend racer clinics. The clinics provided education focused lessons on the numerous STEAMx principals. The derby will have 24 participants, but over 300 children attended the racer clinics.

During the clinics, Let’s Grow STEAMx Chairman David Britt noted something special about the experience.

“None of these kids have cell phones out,” said Britt. “No electronics, they’re just having fun and they’re learning at the same time.”

The race is all about education and fun, but there is a little extra incentive to win, There are cash awards that go alongs with the trophies. The racer who comes in first place wins $300.
